What plant would you recommend for a dark room?Updated 3 months ago

This really depends on the level of darkness! It is a question we get a lot, though, so here’s some guidance:

  • If your room is dark because it has a small window, or the window is north-facing, you may be able to grow plants such as Pothos, Monstera, Maranta and other plants that grow beneath the rainforest canopy. They will need to be fairly near the window.

  • If your room is dark and only gets light through the door or an internal window, you might need to go for something like a fern that is happier in deeper shade. Ferns love it to be damp, so they are also a good recommendation for shady bathrooms!

  • If your room has no window and the light is off, and the door closed most of the day, it may not be an appropriate space for a plant. While some plants are happy with low light, there are no plants that happily grow without any light at all. We’d recommend some other form of indoor decor to bring colour to the room - you could go for a paper garland with houseplants on it, hanging decorations in bright colours or in the shape of your favourite British wildlife, or a nice print on the wall.
