How do I repot a plant?Updated 3 months ago
Repotting can be slightly different for different plants - some need it more frequently than others, and some are more complicated or more fussy (for example, a Bonsai repot will be tricky, but repotting a spider plant shouldn’t be too much of a challenge!) Some general rules include:
Water 24 hours before you plan to repot - this will make it easier on you and on your plant’s roots
Go up one pot size at a time - when they’re small, this probably means just big enough to fit your fingers between the old pot and the new; in larger pots, the difference in diameter will be more like 2-3cm
Choose a decent soil. We use Soil Ninja’s recommendations for their soil mixes, and you can ask us instore or via the contact form here on the website if you’d like more advice. Make sure that, whatever soil you’re using, it’s designed for indoor plants - outdoor compost doesn't usually have enough drainage or indoor growing.
If you are still wary about repotting, we’re happy to give more detailed and specific advice if you get in touch through our website contact form, or if you are here in Bristol, you can bring your plant to us and get it repotted through our repotting service.
